Velocity First Time Set Up

Velocity Premises have unique infrastructure and set up requirements on account of the Smart Wiring installed.

Smart Wiring in the context of a Velocity premise is wiring that distributes ethernet from a Switch or Distribution Point near the ONU (Optical Network Unit) which terminates as data ports throughout the house.

This allows you to have flexibility and freedom in where your Wi-Fi router is located in your home, as our service can flow through the ONU into one of many Distribution Points throughout your house.

Identify ONU

The first step in getting Set-Up on your newly transition OptiComm service is to locate locate and identify the ONU. If the ONU is indoors, it will be one of two models, pictured below.

Cabling

If you were previously connected on the Velocity Network prior to the transition, it's very likely that you have the Telstra Smart Modem still connected, either directly to the ONU or via the Smart Wiring. If this is the case and you're happy with the location of the Router, simply take the Ethernet cable that connects to the WAN port of the Telstra Smart Modem and instead connect it to the WAN port of your new Nokia Beacon.

If you have never connected to the Velocity Network, we recommend taking your new router directly to the ONU and connecting from LAN1 of the ONU to WAN of your router. This eliminates any complexity in the internal Smart Wiring. Once connected, allow up to 5 minutes for the service to authenticate on your router and once you have confidence you are up and running, reconnect the router using internal Smart Wiring
