Static IP vs Dynamic IP
What is an IP address?
When setting up your internet connection, you have probably seen a series of numbers that look like this 192.167.1.25. This is an IP address, more specifically an Internet Protocol version 4 address (IPv4), the most commonly used type of IP address to identify a device on a network.
Networking protocols use the IP address to deliver network traffic to the device. Each device, whether wired or using WiFi, has a unique IP address. When two devices communicate across a network, data is transmitted by one device and received by the other.
What is the difference between a static IP and a dynamic IP address?
A dynamic IP address changes every time you reconnect to a network and it continually changes over time. Most devices use dynamic IP addresses, which are automatically assigned by the network via Dynamic Host Control Protocol ( DHCP).
A static IP address is a public IP address that does not change, it is manually assigned to your device by your internet service provider. It can help ensure that the internet speed and connection quality stays the same. Static IP addresses are commonly used in situations where it is important to have a consistent address, such as for a mail or file server, or a security camera.
Which one suits my needs?
For most internet users that typically do web browsing, video streaming or calls, general remote work, online gaming or access education services and resources, a dynamic IP address will be suitable for your needs. A benefit of using a dynamic IP address is that it is harder for hackers to access your device.
A static IP address is more suitable if you need to do any of the following activities:
- Host a web, email or file (FTP) server
- Combined with an SSL certificate, secure customer data if you’re running an e-commerce business
- Manage a large number of connections at the same time e.g. gaming server
- Remotely connect to your home computer from work regularly
- Have a program, web application or a requirement from your employer to have a Static IP address
The main downside of a static IP address is that it is less secure as it does not change, plus there is often a cost involved.
How much does a static IP address cost?
With Uniti Internet, the cost of setting up and maintaining a static IP address is $10 per month (inc. GST).
Whether you choose a dynamic or static IP address, remember to put protections in place so you less susceptible to any cyber threats. Refer to https://www.cyber.gov.au/protect-yourself for more information.
